天下江山第一楼——黄鹤楼自春秋战国时期以来，武汉地区一直是*南方的军事和商业重镇。在清末、*时期及中华人民共和国初期，武汉经济繁荣，位居亚洲前列。清初，“中俄茶叶之路”开辟，作为起点的汉口开始逐步成为世界茶叶贸易之都，被欧洲人誉为“茶叶港” 。汉口开埠后，对外贸易与上海并驾齐驱，成为“驾乎津门、直逼沪上”的全国第二大城市，被誉为“东方芝加哥” 。1861年，汉口成为条约口岸城市，对西方人开放，开始了由传统商业市镇向近代都会的转型，汉口沿长江先后开辟了英国、俄国、德国、法国、日本等五国租界，沿长江地带迅速成为汉口的另一个繁华中心，并促使汉口成为与大上海共享荣耀的国际大都市。1911年，武昌起义一声枪响，标志着辛亥革命的全面爆发，成就了*推翻帝制、建立亚洲第一个共和国的丰功伟绩。在1926年到1949年间，三镇分别对应着汉口特别市(直辖市)、武昌市(湖北省省会)和汉阳县。1927年，国民 *迁都至武汉，首次将汉口、武昌、汉阳三镇合并为京兆区，总称武汉，开三镇合并之先河。1949年5月24日，武汉市人民*成立，暂由中央直辖，成为新*首个直辖市。1954年6月19日，中央会议决定将武汉由中央直辖改为湖北省省会。

武汉地区考古发现的历史可以上溯到距今6000年的新石器时代，其考古发现有东湖放鹰台遗址的含有稻壳的红烧土、石斧、石锛以及鱼叉。市郊黄陂境内的张西湾古城遗址为4300年前古人类生活的重要遗存。盘龙城遗址是距今约3500年前的商朝方国宫城。春秋战国时期，武汉属楚国管辖。
武汉地方建制始于西汉，为江夏郡沙羡县地。东汉末年，在今汉阳先后兴建却月城和鲁山城，在今武昌蛇山兴建夏口城。时荆州牧刘表派黄祖为江夏太守，将郡治设在位于今汉阳龟山的“却月城”中。“却月城”遂成为武汉市区内已知的最早城堡。公元223年(吴黄武二年)，东吴孙权在武昌蛇山修筑夏口城，同时在城内的黄鹄矶上修筑瞭望塔，取名黄鹤楼。南朝时，夏口扩建为郢州，成为郢州的治所。
隋置江夏县和汉阳县，分别以武昌、汉阳为治所。唐时江夏(武昌)和汉阳分别升为鄂州和沔州的州治，成为长江沿岸的商业重镇。江城之称亦始于隋唐。此后经宋以迄明、清，均为历代州府治所。
两宋时武昌属鄂州，汉阳、汉口属汉阳军。南宋抗金将领岳飞驻防鄂州(今武昌)8年，在此兴师北伐。1281年〔元世祖至元十八年)，武昌成为湖广行省的省治。这是武汉第一次成为一级行政单位(相当于现代的省一级)的治所。
明代，朱元璋第六子朱桢被分封到武昌做楚王。由于成化年间汉水改道从龟山以北汇入长江，到嘉靖年间在汉水新河道北岸(凹岸)形成新兴的汉口镇。明末清初汉口与朱仙镇、景德镇、佛山镇同称天下“四大名镇”，称为“楚中第一繁盛”，成为全国性水陆交通枢纽，享有“九省通衢”的美誉。
清末，汉口建制为夏口厅(地位同县)，使武汉三镇之名贯于清代、*，三城鼎足雄峙更属罕见。
1858年清*与英国签订的不*等条约《天津条约》中增辟的11个通商口岸，包括汉口。1861年3月汉口正式开埠。在老汉口镇的下游沿长江先后开辟了汉口英租界、汉口德租界、汉口俄租界、汉口法租界和汉口日租界五国租界。这些租界独立于**管辖之外，在界内分别设置工部局、巡捕房、领事法院(庭)等迥异于*政治体制的管理机构。1911年10月10日，辛亥革命首义于武昌，宣布脱离清朝，成立*，建立*军*，武汉成为革命中心。
1912年，改江夏县为武昌县，废汉阳府留汉阳县，改夏口厅为夏口县。三镇鼎立，以武昌为湖北省省会。
1914年属江汉道。1917年，汉口德租界被**收回，改称汉口特别区。1925年，汉口俄租界被**收回，改称汉口特区。1926年，北伐军攻占武汉三镇，划武昌县城区为武昌市，划夏口县城区设汉口市。1927年初，国民 *自广州迁至武汉，将汉口、武昌两市划为京兆区，武汉成为国民 *首都。1月5日，数十万群众 冲击了汉口英租界，3月15日，国民 *正式收回该租界，改称*汉口第二特别区。4月，武汉市*成立。
此后，武汉市行政区域时分时合，市政机关名称数易，先后建立武汉(特别)市、汉口(特别)市、武昌市*(处)。其间，1929年4月，设武汉特别市，7月，武汉分治，设汉口特别市，直隶国民 *行政院，余皆隶湖北省。1929年7月30日，夏口县建置撤销，管辖区域分别划人汉口市和汉阳县。1938年8月，汉口日租界被**收回，改称汉口第四特别区(武汉沦陷后，日租界又得以恢复)。
1945年8月抗日战争胜利后，汉口、武昌两市恢复建制。同时，汉口日、法租界正式被**收回，汉口区域均归汉口市*管辖。1947年汉口市改为国民 *行政院直辖。
1949年5月武汉*，5月24日合原汉口市、武昌市和汉阳县城区为武汉市，隶属中南军政委员会管理。1953年1月，中南军政委员会撤销，中南行政委员会成立。由于中南行政委员会不再是一级*，1953年3月，武汉市等10个大行政区辖市改为中央直辖市。1954年6月改为湖北省辖。1959年3月，*批准孝感专区划归武汉市辖，1960年1月湖北省撤销孝感专区，其所辖武昌等16县改隶武汉市。1961年1月恢复孝感专区建制，其原有16县划回。1975年12月原属孝感专区的武昌、汉阳两县划归武汉市管辖。1983年8月，增辖黄陂、新洲两县。1984年5月，*中央、*正式批准武汉市为经济体制综合改革试点城市(计划单列市，1993年撤销单列)。1992年、1995年、1998年，分别撤销汉阳县，武昌县及黄陂县、新洲县建制，分别成立武汉市蔡甸区，江夏区及黄陂区、新洲区。2013年，全市辖江岸、江汉、硚口、汉阳、武昌、青山、洪山、东西湖、汉南、江夏、蔡甸、黄陂、新洲13个行政区和东湖新技术开发区、武汉经济技术开发区、东湖生态旅游风景区、武汉化学工业区、武汉新港以及吴家山经济技术开发区。
